Am I Experiencing Side Effects of Hydrocodone or Signs of Dependence?

Most doctors only prescribe hydrocodone for those suffering with severe pain resulting from disease or injury. However, despite strict regulations, many individuals increase their dose throughout their treatment. Because of this individuals are finding it more and more difficult to tell if they have become addicted to the substance or are just experiencing common side effects.

Common Side Effects of Hydrocodone

Due to hydrocodone’s addictive qualities, one may find it difficult to distinguish if they are experiencing common side effects of the drug if they have become addicted to the substance.  Included in the following are some examples of common side effects associated with hydrocodone use:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Mental and physical exhaustion
  • Headaches

It is common when starting a medication to note any changes that could be a side effect of properly using the medication. Even with proper use, addiction can occur and the odds of this occurring are greatly increased the longer one uses the medication. However, being alert to changes can help one understand the difference between common side effects and possible dependence warning signs.

Signs of Hydrocodone Dependence

Hydrocodone addiction causes numerous changes in the addict. Signs and symptoms of hydrocodone abuse and addiction are not always easy to observe because they vary from person to person. However, there are a few common signs of hydrocodone abuse, including:

  • Requesting frequent refills
  • Body builds a tolerance
  • Withdrawal symptoms with a skipped dose

Each user will experience different side effects in various strengths and likewise, each user who has become dependent on hydrocodone will experience different strengths of dependence. There are common warning signs of dependence one should be attentive to, such as: Is the individual requesting frequent refills? If so, this is an indication that he or she is using more than the prescribed amount. The body will slowly start to build a tolerance to the medication, meaning it will require larger amounts to produce the same effects as the once smaller dose created. Individuals experiencing dependence begin to increase their doses on their own, ultimately building tolerance. Experiencing sudden withdrawal symptoms just after one accidental skipped dose is a major indication that the user has become either addicted to the medication.
