How to Overcome Hydrocodone Cravings

How to Overcome Hydrocodone Cravings

Hydrocodone activates the parts of the brain that encourage behavior. The brain will encourage hydrocodone use and will seek the “reward” provided by the drug. The desire for hydrocodone creates cravings that can be stronger than cravings for survival necessities like food. A hydrocodone craving can begin suddenly with no warnings. When cravings occur, consider the following tips to diminish or overcome cravings:

  • Stay positive. Remember that just because you have a craving you are not weak. Cravings are common, and they do not mean that you will relapse.
  • Learn your triggers. Learn and understand what triggers a craving. If it is a specific situation, try to avoid it. There is no need to make excuses or apologize, you can just leave. The same technique applies for non-environmental triggers as well.
  • Try anti-craving techniques. There are a number of strategies that will help ease a hydrocodone craving. One such strategy is the “5 minute contract.” Make an agreement with yourself that you will not act on the desire for 5 minutes. Find a distracting activity in the meantime. Most cravings are short lived, and you will find that the initial craving will be weaker if you can tough out the first few minutes.
  • Ask for guidance from a trained professional. A counselor will be able to provide techniques that will work specifically for you.
  • Reach out. Find someone in your support group such as an NA member, your spouse, your sibling or a close friend that will encourage you not to use. Keep a phone list handy for when a craving develops.
  • Keep a list of reasons to quit using hydrocodone. Post a list of reasons to stay clean visible at all times. Remind yourself why you have stopped using.
  • Challenge your thinking. Identify the truth about your addiction. It is important to accept the things it did “to” you rather than “for” you.
  • Use prayer. If you are spiritual, prayer can help stifle cravings.
  • Write a letter. A letter to a loved one explaining why you’re not using is a great way to resist a craving.
